Scenarios:
- My game crashed and now my profile is corrupted. Can I restore my progress?
- Can I rollback my save at all?
Related Games: Remnant: From the Ashes
Cause: If your game crashes for any reason, it's possible your save profile could become corrupted. Fortunately, in some situations there is a way to restore your progress.
Resolution:
If you see the "Profile is Corrupt" error message after starting the game and are asked whether you would like to delete your profile, choose the No option and close the game.
If you are playing on PC through Steam or Epic, then you can do the following to potentially restore your profile, or rollback your progress for any reason:
- Steam only: Temporarily disable Cloud Save for Remnant. From the Library in Steam, right-click Remnant: From the Ashes and select Properties. Turn off the Steam Cloud option.
- Open File Explorer in Windows (Start Menu > type: File Explorer)
- Make sure you have file name extensions showing. If you do not, switch to the View tab in File Explorer and enable the checkbox for "File name extensions" in the Show/hide section.
- Paste this into the address bar: %localappdata%\Remnant\Saved
- To be safe, make a backup copy of the "SavedGames" folder (right-click, select Copy, then right-click the empty area in this folder and select Paste). It should create a "SaveGames - Copy" folder.
- Rename "SaveGames - Copy" to "SaveGames - Backup1". If you make a mistake during the restoration process, then you can copy the files from this folder.
- Open SaveGames (not your backup folder)
- This folder will contain these files:
- Your account profile (profile.sav) and a backup (profile.bak)
- Save files for each of your characters (save_0.sav, save_1.sav, etc.) and backups for each (save_0.bak, save_1.bak, etc.)
- If you have played online, then you will also see a profile.onl file. This is a backup from prior to the last time you connected online.
- Check the date/timestamps for profile.bak and profile.onl (if present) to determine which file you want to rollback to. You will want the backup prior to the the issue occurring (Right-click the file, select Copy, then right-click the empty area in this folder and select Paste)
- Right-click "profile.sav" and delete it.
- Right-click "profile.bak - Copy" or "profile.onl - Copy" and rename it to: profile.sav
- If you need to restore a previous version of your character as well, then use the same process to do so:
- Right-click "save_0.sav" (if it's your first character slot, the second slot will be save_1.sav, the third slot will be save_2.sav, etc) and delete it.
- Right-click "save_0.bak", select Copy, then right-click the empty area in this folder and select Paste
- Rename "save_0.bak - Copy" to: save_0.sav
- Launch the game again. Hopefully you will have access to your profile and character again.
- Steam only: If the process restored your profile successfully, you can re-enable Steam Cloud Save now.
If you are playing the Windows Store version, the save file system is different, so please contact Customer Support for more assistance.
Note in some situations the backup files can become corrupted as well. Unfortunately in these situations there may not be an alternative to starting over.
On PlayStation, it may be possible to restore lost progress if you have automatic cloud save syncing disabled and an older version of your save file exists on the cloud.
On Xbox, cloud save syncing is automatic while your console is online, so it may not be possible to restore your progress.
Therefore we highly recommend making periodic manual backups of the SaveGames folder (on PC), or disabling automatic save syncing (PlayStation) and manually backup your save to the cloud between play sessions.
