Under certain conditions, Torchlight characters may become trapped in areas of the map not intended for direct player interaction. This can be caused by many factors (e.g. player skills), but the result is that the player is unable to get their character un-stuck.
The easiest solution is to use a Town Portal Scroll to teleport back to town. If this works, then no further action is required.
Ascending your character
If you are unable to use a Town Portal Scroll, the console can be used to ascend the player up to another floor:
For Windows XP users
If you already have console access, skip steps 1 through 5.
- From the Start menu, choose Run...
- Type %appdata% and press enter.
- Browse to runic games\torchlight.
- Locate settings.txt and open it.
- Change CONSOLE :0 to CONSOLE :1 and save.
- Launch Torchlight and load your character save.
- Once loaded, hold shift and press ~ to open a console window.
- From the console prompt, type ascend and press enter.
For Mac OS X users
If you already have console access, skip steps 1 through 5.
- From the Finder, open the Go menu.
- Hold Option and choose Library.
- Browse to Application Support/runic games/torchlight.
- Locate settings.txt and open it.
- Change CONSOLE :0 to CONSOLE :1 and save.
- Launch Torchlight and load your character save.
- Once loaded, hold shift and press ~ to open a console window.
- From the console prompt, type ascend and press enter.
At this point, a loading screen will appear while your character ascends by one floor.
Further Information
Some international keyboard layouts map ~ differently from the US standard layout and will therefore not trigger the console when shift + ~ is pressed. Try using shift with other key combos to see if you can find the right match to open the console. As always, you can contact Customer Support for further assistance.
For Xbox users
If your character is stuck, hold down both controller bumpers and load your game save. This should force your character to re-appear at the beginning of the floor.
