Known Issue: Unable to write to save folder
Some applications may prevent writing to your save folder. In particular, security applications such as Bitdefender have been known to cause issues. If you have this app installed on your machine, try disabling the Write Protection service, which runs in the background.
Other security applications may require application-specific exceptions to be made for Hob or specific directories on your computer, such as your save folder location (see step 1).
Progress Lost
If you lose progress for any reason in the game, do not relaunch until you've done the following:
1. Locate your character save folder
For Steam builds...
- Documents\My Games\Runic Games\Hob\SAVES\[YOUR_STEAM_ID]\
For GOG.com builds...
- Documents\My Games\Runic Games\Hob\SAVES\
2. Find your backup saves
Note: For more information about backup saves, see What are backup saves? in the knowledge base.
Inside your save location will be a folder named BACKUPS which will contained files named like SAVE0_0.BCK. Generally, the most recently modified of these will be your desired save.
3. Revert
To restore, you can simply rename the desired *.BCK file (for example as SAVE0.HOB) and place it in the SAVES folder.
Last ditch efforts
Once you have tried everything else, there is one last thing you can do, but make sure you've done the steps above first.
If your version of Windows has been configured to save earlier copies of your files, you may be able to simply right click on your game save file and choose Restore previous versions… to revert your save. This won't always work, but it's worth a shot. Please be aware that we cannot troubleshoot any issues that may arise from using this option, so do so at your own risk.
